This
painting took two years to finish. I took many photos of the tulip magnolia
tree at the former Devlin Winery in Soquel, California. I juxtaposed
them to show the meadow and redwoods in a soft focus behind them. The
flowers were no longer in bloom by the time I had my initial drawing
done. I waited until the next year when I could have the actual flowers
in hand and could see all of the detail not noticeable in the original
pictures, including the little growth lines and spots on the stems and
fuzziness of the buds. I was especially pleased with the highlighting
of the branches and flowers.
