Coastal Color

This painting was the result of a challenge I made to myself. My silk paintings have become more and more like my watercolors as I work back and forth between mediums. I was determined to do this silk painting without any white resist lines, which required much planning and patience on my part. The scene is in La Selva Beach near Santa Cruz, California. After a wet EL Niño winter the echium plants with their vertical purple stalks were more abundant and gorgeous than usual. I took some pictures of them with a bit of the coast and some sunlit eucalyptus trees in the background. The orange cat enjoying the sunshine is one of the few animals I have painted that I do not know personally.
